Inside houses: raccoons (procyon lotor) and red squirrels (tamiasciurus hudsonicus) are the most common, though mice (mus spp.) Are a close third. Outside: issues with groundhogs (marmota monax), raccoons, and skunks (mephitis mephitis), especially around decks or sources of food are all common.
The number of animals is highly dependent on the species, time of year, and your location. Our animal control technicians are able to determine the most likely species and access point for animals causing your concerns. Once we can inspect your property we can give a better idea, but no guaranteed number of animals.
We track each entry for activity and once we do not have activity for 3+ days it is good to seal up.
Unfortunately, common critters is not equipped to handle feral cats, dogs, or other pet species. We suggest contacting county animal control for these types of concerns, especially if the animal appears sick or injured.
If we see something, our technicians are happy to let you know of the problem, be it a large amount of droppings, torn-up or non-functional insulation, or chewed on wires. However, we are not electricians nor an attic cleaning company. We do not go digging under insulation to check every wire, and we cannot replace damaged insulation. We can remove debris such as twigs and grass from bird or squirrel nests, but once we have to scrape up insulation to remove more material, it is time to call a different professional.
After we have removed any nuisance animals:
- We recommend that you contact a certified attic cleaning company with a hepa-filter vacuum system for further concerns dealing with attic debris.
- We recommend that you contact an electrician if you have further concerns about wiring.
While uncommon in michigan compared to more southerly states, rabies can occur in several wildlife species found in oakland county. Bats, groundhogs, opossums, raccoons, and skunks have all been known to carry the virus. While there is no way to determine 100% if an animal is infected without sending it to be tested, there are usually behavioral indications but not always.
